StarLab Training Institute

Investigate StarLab, a portable planetarium, which allows you to teach basic concepts of astronomy in a fun and exciting manner!

The StarLab Training Institute is a four-day course designed for educators of grades K–12. Through a variety of hands-on activities participants learn to use StarLab, an 11-foot-high by 23-foot-wide portable planetarium that can be easily set up in a gymnasium or auditorium stage. When deflated, StarLab fits into the backseat of a medium-sized car. Once you have completed this course, you become certified and are eligible to rent this equipment to take into your own classroom!

Fee: $350 per participant Dates: July 27–29, 2010, 9 am–4 pm*

Crime Scene Information Technology

CSIT is an initiative of the New York Hall of Science initially funded by the National Science
Foundation. The project puts computers and other digital tools into New York classrooms
within a context where inquiry-based STEM learning is supported modules into their scope
and sequence.

During the CSIT Training Institute you will:
Learn to operate and maintain the CSIT computers and equipment.
Learn how to incorporate the CSIT mysteries into your Scope and Sequence.
Participate in activities that emphasize inquiry and discovery learning.
Work in cooperative groups to create lessons incorporating the equipment.

Fee: $350 per participant Dates: August 3 - 5, 2010, 9 am – 4 pm (p-credits not available)

BiotechLab Training Institute

Get your students excited about DNA, gel electrophoresis and cloning!

The BiotechLab Training Institute is a three-day program designed for science educators of grades 6–12. During this program, you will learn how to use the Hall’s BiotechLab Classroom Rental Kit by participating in a variety of hands-on activities. This kit features materials for up to 32 students, including eight dual electrophoresis units, four dual power supplies, variable micropipettes, a centrifuge, a light visualization system for gels, a dual water-bath, an incubator, and all the reagents (agar, buffer, staining cards, DNA/dyes) and expendable materials for each investigation.

Fee: $350 per participant .Dates: July 22 - 24, 2010 (with additional fees, days, and projects for p-credit), 9 am – 4 pm

MicroLab Professional Development For Biology and Chemistry Teachers

Get your students excited about protozoans, bacteria and other microorganisms!

The MicroLab Training Institute is a four-day course designed for educators of grades K–12. During this course, you learn to use the Hall’s MicroLab Classroom Rental Kit by participating in a variety of hands-on activities. The standard kit includes a set of 15 field microscopes, a video microscope that can be connected to a projector or TV monitor, and expendable materials. The 9–12 supplement kit features four iBook laptops with software to study microorganisms, and four Vernier LabPro units that include CO2 probes, temperature probes, and FlexCams.

Fee: $350 per participant Dates: August 10 – 12, 2010, 9 am – 4 pm (with additional fees, days, and projects for p-credit)*
