Physics Club/Chemistry Teachers' Club
of New York
The information below details the plans for the joint monthly meetings of the Chemistry Teachers' Club of New York and the Physics Club of New York for the 2008 - 2009 school year.
(Your students are welcome except where indicated.)

All meetings are free and are held at NYU, Silver Center Room 207, 32 Waverly Place (southeast corner Washington Sq. East) Manhattan, NY 10003, Fridays at 7:15 PM unless otherwise noted. Security at NYU requires that you show a picture ID.
2008
Sep 19: Gail Horowitz, Dept. of Chemistry, Yeshiva University, 212-960-5400 x6863, “Using the Digital Resources of the Journal of Chemical Education.”
.
.....Ms. Horowitz received a BA Chemistry from Barnard, MA Chemistry from Columbia and is a Ph.D. Candidate in Science Education (expected May 2009) at Teachers College. She has been a Chemistry Instructor and Laboratory Coordinator at Yeshiva College, Yeshiva U since 1990.
.
Oct 17: Christopher Ward, Hommocks School, Mamaroneck, NY 10543, “Using Video Interactively in the Classroom.”
.....Overview of strategies to use with clips from Channel Thirteen's website in biology, chemistry, physics and Earth science. Learn how to access this site; what the site offers; other services offered by http://www.thirteen.org/edonline/educators.html.
.
Nov 14: David Maiullo, Physics Support Specialist, Department of Physics and Astronomy, Rutgers the State University of NJ, 136 Frelinghuysen Road, Piscataway, NJ 08854, 732-445-3872, “Physics Demonstrations as Theater.”
.
.....“Physics demonstrations should be fun and exciting. They hold the interest of students while introducing and reinforcing important concepts. You should enjoy performing the demonstrations as much as your students enjoy watching them. I'll try to show the common problems and pitfalls teachers and instructors run into while doing demonstrations, as well as illustrate how a successful physics demonstration can be performed.”
.
Dec 12: Dr. Jin Kim Montclair, Assistant Professor, Polytechnic University, Brooklyn, NY, “Bio Related Polymers.”
.
.....“The Protein Engineering and Molecular Design Lab began July 2005. Broadly, our lab is focused on engineering macromolecules. The long-term goal of our lab research is to be able to predictably design or engineer artificial therapeutics, biocatalysts, scaffolds and cells. We seek to provide biologically inspired solutions to address the challenges of human disorder treatment and medicine, sustainable energy and environmental remediation.”
.
.....Dr. Montclair received a B.S. summa cum laude, Fordham; an M.S. and Ph.D in Bioorganic Chemistry, Yale; and she was a Postdoctoral fellow, California Institute of Technology.
.
2009
Jan 9: Dr. Jerry DeMenna, Fun-Science Academics, 345 W. 58th St. Suite 2K, New York, NY 10019, 732-207-8835, “Learn That Technology Is Fun: Spectrometric Examination of Barbeque Sauce.”
.
Feb 13: Dr. David W. Hogg, Associate Professor, Center for Cosmology and Particle Physics, Dept. of Physics, NYU “Massive Data Sets in Astrophysics Including Sloan Digital Sky Survey.”
.
.....Dr. Hogg participates in and uses the very large Sloan Digital Sky Survey and other large surveys. His group maintains and uses more than 30 Tb of astronomical data. They do science with and create new data analysis techniques for data sets of non-trivial size and complexity. They have started a big project on automating astrometry, which is crucial for the next generation of enormous astrophysics projects.
.
Mar 13: Dr. William Horak, Chair, Energy Sciences and Technology Department, Building 475B, Brookhaven National Laboratory, Upton, NY 11973 5000, 631 344 2627, “Integrated Planning for Energy Security and Environmental Sustainability.”
.
Apr 24: “Demo Derby”, an evening of non-stop demonstrations (5-8 minutes max.) If you want to participate, just bring your demo along with clean-up equipment and your safety apparel, and write your name on the board. Remember, its quick, quick, quick. You're not teaching, just showing what can be demonstrated in the classroom.
.
May 15: “Award Dinner” (Awardee and location to be determined.)
.
